From The Archives: Pat Boone Invitational
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Lipscomb University is reminding us this week that singer Pat Boone is a member of their Hall of Fame.
Boone was a popular singer, movie star and general heartthrob back in the 1950s and 60s.
But the 88 year old is still out there.
Just this week he was at Graceland for Elvis Week, telling stories about the King.
(Elvis opened a show for him before he had any hits and Boone had just landed his first. He said he learned that night never to follow Elvis again on stage!)
Boone attended Lipscomb University in Nashville, which is a Church of Christ school.
Of course, they honored him not just for his career in show business but also for his Christian causes.
And one of them was here in Chattanooga.
For years, Boone held a celebrity golf tournament and show at Memorial Auditorium to raise both funds and awareness for the Bethel Bible Village.
He would bring in stars from music, movies and sports to help him do it.
This story from 1989 was on the golf tournament.
The stars joining Pat that year were musician Roy Clark, comedian Foster Brookes, and Vols football coach Johnny Majors.
