Pets and the cold temperatures

Temperatures are going on a roller coaster ride this week and local pet experts say its time to take the proper precautions.

Bob Poore, Nooga Paws Owner said, "We always advice to bring the dog or cat in when its really cold out." Normals for the first week of November range from 64 degrees for high temperatures and around 41 degrees for overnight low temperatures. At the end of this week, our high temperature will be close to the normal low temperature. The cold weather doesn’t only effect people, man’s best friend needs special attention during this time as well, starting with the proper dog house. Bob Cutrillo, Chattanooga Humane Educational Society Executive Director said, "The dog house should be big enough inside for them to get up and turn around and lie down, but not so big that it doesn’t retain their body heat. Also these dog houses need to up off the ground. At least a few inches." Representatives with the Humane Educational Society says the door of the house needs to be away from the wind. Adding straw to the floor is also encouraged. Cutrillo said, "There are several other things to think about when we are outside. Its great to go out and exercise but just like us, they get cold too. If you have small dogs with short hair they need to have a jacket."

Nooga Paws in Chattanooga stocked up their jacket and sweater supply Wendesday and believes they are a good investment for any size dog. Poore said, "These are sweaters from South America that are hand woven, they are a fair trade product as well and they are great. They are in funky colors, but they are 100-percent wool, so they can get wet and still provide warmth."
