Business Owners Gear up for Small Business Saturday

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – No question about it .. Shoppers are lured to Black Friday because of the deep discounts, like half off a 40 inch TV or cheap video games.

But what’s the lure to Small Business Saturday?

It’s been up and running since 2010.

Mary Ashley Littell, a shopper, says, "I think it’s the perfect time to come to support local businesses and to really get a feel for what’s down here that’s unique and isn’t just the same cookie cutter mold that you can find other places."

While small businesses cannot afford to offer huge discounts, most do offer a small percentage off and free gift wrapping, like Blue Skies on Frazier Street.

They’re one of more than 566,000 small businesses across Tennessee.

Linda White, an Artist at In-Town Gallery, says, "When we first moved here there were some empty buildings and businesses that had been here a long time that since closed. Now it’s a vibrant street of small businesses."

According to American Express, consumers spent more than $5.7 billion dollars last year on Small Business Saturday.

It’s a movement that’s catching on.

Tina Harrison with Blue Skies in Chattanooga, says, "You’re supporting those businesses and those places that make your city unique from any other city in the world."

By shopping at some small businesses you’re not just helping the local economy, but also the global economy.

Sherra Lewis, Owner of Go Fish Clothing and Jewelry, adds, "We have global goods in a local shop.  Our mission is to help those families in developing countries start their own business, so it’s working full circle."

These business owners say it’s something to think about this weekend when you are standing in long lines at big box retailers.
