Alabama chase suspect captured after crashing into a tree

FORT PAYNE, Alabama (WDEF) – Police chased a suspect Monday night from Fort Payne to Valley Head, where he wrecked.

Officers say it started when a station wagon ran a red light at the South Y and Gault Avenue intersection in Fort Payne just before 8:30 PM.

The chase continued north through Fort Payne and into the town of Valley Head, where police there helped stop the vehicle.

The driver tried to turn left on Palmer Road, but left the roadway and slid into a tree.

Officers say 32 year old Michael Jacob Leftwich had a strong odor of alcohol when they pulled him out of the car.

They say they found a variety of intoxicants inside, including marijuana, marijuana honey, cookies that contained THC, a marijuana smoking pipe, an open bottle of Gentleman Jack Whiskey.

They also found a loaded Glock 43 9mm pistol in the car.

Leftwich faces charges of DUI and eluding arrest.
