Alabama governments, nonprofits receive funding to fight homelessness
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDEF) — Alabama’s governor has awarded $2.5 million in grants to help those facing homelessness across the state.
The funds come from the Emergency Solutions Grants program and will go toward local governments and nonprofit agencies.
The grants will help provide housing and other needs to people facing homelessness in Alabama.
Various north Alabama areas are receiving support.
Governor Kay Ivey awarded $250,000 to “The Right Place for Housing and Support,” located in Anniston. Alabama officials say this organization will “provide street outreach, emergency shelter, homeless prevention and rapid rehousing.” This will benefit those living in Calhoun, Cherokee, DeKalb and Etowah counties.
In addition, she awarded the City of Huntsville with $400,000 to provide housing and shelter. This will benefit people in Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties.
Governor Ivey also awarded over $300,000 to the City of Florence to provide assistance to those who are homeless or near homeless. The city will provide assistance in Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Marion and Winston Counties.
Second Chance Inc. in Anniston also received $240,000 to provide rehousing and emergency shelter for those facing domestic violence. This will support Calhoun, Cherokee, Etowah, Randolph and Talladega Counties.
Governor Ivey awarded many other grants throughout the state as well.
“Emergency Solutions Grants are a measure to help people who for a number of reasons find themselves in need of a safe shelter,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend these governments and organizations for assisting these individuals and families by ensuring they have secure housing during a time of great need.”
The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
