Alabama governor grants over $1 million for electric charging stations
MONTGOMER, Ala. (WDEF) — Alabama Governor Kay Ivey awarded $1.2 million to install electric vehicle charging stations across the state.
The award grants will be going in Gadsden, Wedowee, Phenix City, Montgomery and Dothan. These locations target well-traveled highways, according to Governor Ivey.
The governor says the grants are to help the state become ready for more electric vehicles hitting the streets.
The Alabama Legislature, through the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program, provided funding for the new stations.
Here is what each location was awarded:
Gadsden
- $180,965 in grants.
- Two charging stations.
- Located in city parking lot, 515 Broad Street.
- Awarded to Ira Phillips Inc.
Wedowee
- $180,424 in grants.
- One 2-bay charging station.
- Located at Allen’s Food Mart, 1308 Main Street.
- Awarded to Allen Oil Co.
Phenix City
- $265,511 in grants.
- One 2-bay charging station.
- Located at Burger King, 1135 East U.S. 280 Bypass.
- Awarded to Catcard LLC.
Montgomery
- $461,700 in grants.
- Eight charging stations.
- Located at Montgomery Whitewater, 1100 Maxwell Boulevard.
- Awarded to Montgomery County Commission.
Dothan
- $118,974 in grants.
- Two charging stations.
- Located at James Oates Park, 798 Campbellton Highway.
- Awarded to the City of Dothan.
“As more electric cars and trucks, including many models produced by Alabama car manufacturers, make their way onto Alabama roadways, they will need access to adequate charging facilities,” Gov. Ivey said. “Our goal is to ensure that electric vehicle charging stations are located not only along the interstate system, but on other major highway arteries throughout the state.”
