Alabama invests in study to consider expansion of Little River Canyon Center
FORT PAYNE, Alabama (WDEF) – Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has announced a grant that could boost tourism on Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County.
The $52,000 would pay for a feasibility study on expanding the Little River Canyon Center and its activities.
The center is an education facility and conference area operated by Jacksonville State, which holds field schools and nature programs.
The Little River Canyon is a 23 mile long river gorge that runs south down Lookout Mountain, past Mentone, and eventually into Weiss Lake.
It includes DeSoto Falls and the DeSoto State Park.
“The canyon center and the educational programs it offers enhances the splendor of Little River Canyon,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to have a role in this project that will help reveal the area’s potential as an outdoor education and recreation location.”
Estimates found more than 200,000 people visit the canyon annually.
ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said “I commend JSU for recognizing Little River Canyon as something special and being willing to invest in the area with so many educational and recreational opportunities.”
