MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDEF) — Alabama residents can receive a free radon test kit for their home from the department of public health (ADPH). radon

The ADPH noted that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. It is a radioactive gas without smell.

In Alabama, Jackson County is one of 15 with the highest potential for high levels of radon.

Dangerous radon exposure can cause persistent coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain.

In the U.S., one in 15 homes have a radon issue, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development explained.

The ADPH said the only way to learn if a home has a radon problem is with a testing kit. That’s why they are offering one free radon kit per household.
