Alabama schools must now develop a cardiac event plan

Governor signs new bill into law

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (WDEF) – All Alabama schools are now required to come up with a cadiac emergency response plan for students.

Governor Kay Ivey signed a bill into law this week mandating it.

It directs local boards to work with local E-M-S on protocols by next school year.

The John Wesley Foster Act is in tribute to a 9 year old boy from Gadsden who died from cardiac arrest almost 20 years ago.

His mother, who is a nurse, believes it’s important for everyone to learn CPR.

The new Alabama law requires AED’S at every school, training for school staff on how to use them, plus creating a cardiac emergency response team.

They would need to cover athletic activities at the school.
