Amazon shoppers in Alabama to pay more after sales tax hike

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Alabama residents will soon being paying more for purchases made on the website Amazon.
According to AL.com (http://bit.ly/2b6GvDb ) buyers will see an additional 8 percent added to their purchases beginning Nov. 1 because the massive online retailer has agreed to start collecting and remitting sales tax in Alabama.

Amazon is the latest retailer to participate in Alabama’s Simplified Use Tax Remittance Program which allows eligible retailers to pay a flat 8 percent tax instead of keeping up with variances among state and local sales rates.

The change will mean a revenue boost for the state.

The majority of the revenue from the tax will go to the state’s general fund. The remainder will be distributed to cities and counties based on population.
