Ammonia spill forces evacuations in Trion
TRION, Ga. (WDEF) – A chemical spill late Wednesday night forced evacuations in Trion and calls Hamilton County Hazmat Team for aid.
Around 10 p.m., the driver of a truck carrying anhydrous ammonia to Mount Vernon Mills in Trion noticed the truck was leaking and pulled over.
Various agencies responded to Fourth Street for the reported leak, and Trion Fire Department requested assistance to contain and clean up the leak.
The ammonia leak prompted several streets to be completely shut down and an evacuation of the homes adjacent to the mill. Law enforcement was stationed at various points to redirect traffic.
The recreation center was opened to anyone who was displaced from the evacuation.
Chattanooga Fire Department Hazmat 1, Special Operations Division and Hamilton County Hazmat Team responded to the incident. The Hamilton County Hazmat Team is accredited to respond to major incidents regionally.
