CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Applications are now open for the “Future Docs Program” which helps students find mentors to job shadow as they consider their career options in medicine.

“Our population is getting older and we’re having health care professionals retiring earlier. We’re going to need some new physicians, nurses, and really any kind of healthcare worker to help care for our population,” Kevin Lusk with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society says about the importance of this program.

The program will provide hands-on resources and opportunities that will help students figure out if this is the career field they want to join. The program offers two tracks during the summer. They offer a Youth Leadership Forum track which is for rising high school seniors and 2025 high school graduates. The intensive four day program will have students shadowing physicians and then will do pig organ dissections and learn about x-rays. The Medical Explorations track is for undergraduates which is a two week program of shadowing a variety of specialized medical careers while having a more in-depth behinds-the-scenes look at medicine.

Deadline to apply for the Youth Leadership Forum track is on April 25. Deadline to apply to the Medical Explorations track is on May 28. To apply for the programs, visit the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society website.
