ArtsBuild announces this year’s Holmberg Award winners

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – ArtsBuild will honor two people with their Ruth Holmberg Arts Leadership Awards this year.

The awards honor people who have made significant contributions to the arts in Chattanooga.

One goes to artist Frances McDonald.

She began a block-long mural project in 1998 with the help of 120 youth in our area.

That experience led her to found Mark Making in 2008.

Since then, the group has collaborated with almost a hundred partners with workshops and creative projects to advance a vision of equity through art.

The other recipient is filmmaker John Beder.

His makes documentaries on social justice, public health and climate change.

Beder has received much praise for his movie “How to Sue the Klan.”

“The arts are powerful tools for change, and both Frances and John embody Ruth Holmberg’s spirit by using creativity to empower and uplift our community,” says ArtsBuild Board President Quincy Jenkins.

The 2025 Ruth Holmberg Arts Leadership Awards will be presented in early December.
