Assault suspects takes on East Ridge police officers; one officer injured

EAST RIDGE, Tennessee (WDEF) – A homeless Rossville man is accused of assaulting several people, including East Ridge police officers during a Friday night incident.

It happened in the 1500 block of Burns Avenue.

According to the East Ridge Police Department, officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress call at a residence in the 1500 block of Burns Avenue.

When the first officer arrived on scene, he reportedly observed a man being beaten in the head and face in the middle of the street. The man who was reportedly administering the beating was identified by police as Matthew Rieder, 18, of Rossville.

According to the arrest affidavit, the first officer on scene attempted to stop the assault by tasing Rieder but the taser had little effect.

The man who was being beaten tried to give the officer a gun that Rieder was attempting to steal. According to the arrest affidavit, when the officer attempted to take the gun, Rieder attack him. The officer was reportedly struck in the head by Rieder and was rendered semi-unconscious.

Another officer arrived on scene and immediately deployed his taser on Rieder but his taser also had little effect on Rieder.

As a result of the taser being ineffective, the second officer reportedly jumped Rieder and the two got into a scuffle as the officer tried to take him into custody. Fortunately a third officer arrived on scene and was able to help the second officer subdue Rieder.

While attempting to take Rieder to Parkridge East Medical Center for evaluation, Rieder reportedly spat blood at the officers.

Once inside the medical center, Rieder reportedly went on a rampage by assaulting two officers and hospital staff. According to police, Rieder had to be given medication to render him powerless.

When police spoke to the victims at the Burns Avenue residence, one of the victims told officers Rieder was outside his home being disorderly. He said when he went outside to see what was going on, the two got into an argument that turned physical.

After the altercation, Rieder reportedly went across the street where he confronted a female who was standing outside her home. The woman told police, Rieder threatened her by saying, “I’m going to F—-ng kill you.” The woman told police she ran back into the house and locked the front door but Rieder forced entry through the back door of her home. The woman reportedly ran back out the front door to another neighbor’s house while holding a hand gun.

The third neighbor took the woman’s handgun and went back to her house to confront Rieder. The third neighbor told police that when he entered the woman’s home, Rieder was throwing items and damaging the woman’s property. According to the arrest affidavit, the third neighbor pointed the gun at Rider and ordered him to stop. Rieder reportedly came toward the man so the man pulled the gun trigger three times but it didn’t fire.

The third neighbor reportedly tried to run away after the gun didn’t fire but Rieder caught up to him in the street and started beating his face and head into the pavement. Rieder was reportedly trying to take the gun but the neighbor was keeping it tucked until police arrived on scene.

Rieder is now facing:

  • Two counts of attempted criminal homicide
  • Four counts of aggravated assault
  • Aggravated burglary
  • Resisting arrest

His bond was set at $50,000.
