Police say man kills himself after shooting into an Athens home

ATHENS, Tennessee (WDEF) – Police say a man fired shots into a home in a neighborhood on Saturday.

It happened around 9 AM in the area of Church and Tell Streets.

Police say David Long came to the area to break into the home of his estranged wife.

When she fled to a neighbor’s house, he followed and fired twice through the door.

Officials say when officers arrived on the scene, Long shot himself in the head.

They say he had several handguns with him.

Athens Police Chief Couch said “while we have a general idea of what happened this morning, the Police Department is obviously still in the process of conducting a full and thorough investigation regarding the details of this situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the neighbors, family members, and others affected by this traumatic incident.”
