Barons Use Six Run 7th Inning to Rally Past the Lookouts
(lookouts.com) On Wednesday afternoon, the Chattanooga Lookouts hosted the Birmingham Barons in the fifth and final game of the home series. Up 4-0 in the series, the Lookouts were seeking a series sweep but the Barons would not be denied. The Barons managed to salvage a game in the series to prevent the sweep by defeating the Lookouts 8-6 in front of a season high crowd of 4,995.
Birmingham struck first, when they scored two runs in the top of the second inning off of Lookouts starting pitcher, Felix Jorge. Chattanooga responded in the bottom of the third inning when they tied the game 2-2 via back-to-back RBI doubles by Ryan Strausborger and Nick Gordon. After tying the game, Felix Jorge settled in and gained command of his pitches to keep the Barons offense at bay.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lookouts bats caught fire as they scored four runs, making the score 6-2. Lookouts second baseman, Levi Michael, crushed a towering homer off of the scoreboard behind the left field wall to give the Lookouts their first lead of the game. Red hot Edgar Corcino added a two run single when he ripped a line drive over the center fielder’s head, which allowed T.J. White and Jose Gonzalez to score.
In the top of the seventh inning, Mason Melotakis entered the game in relief of Lookouts starting pitcher, Felix Jorge. With the bases loaded, Birmingham’s Hunter Jones smacked a grand slam over the center field wall to tie the game 6-6. Not to be outdone, Barons second baseman, Jake Peter, provided the final blow, when he homered on a line drive to right field. Peter’s home run in the seventh proved to be enough to give the Barons an 8-6 game five victory.
Although Wednesday did not go the way the Lookouts would have liked, they picked up a 4-1 series victory over the Barons, making it their fifth series win of the 2017 season. The Lookouts will hit the road as they travel to Biloxi, MS for a five game road series against the Biloxi Shuckers. RHP Fernando Romero (2-4, 3.79) will be on the mound for the Lookouts in game one of the series on Thursday night at MGM Park. The first pitch between the Lookouts and the Shuckers is set for 7:35 PM.
