Battle over Plastic Bags in Georgia Legislature
Some local politicians take the action for environmental reasons and just wanting to limit the trash.
Tybee Island on the Georgia coast is one of the latest.
Supporters say the plastic bags often tangle up sea turtles and other animals.
And they are an eyesoar for tourists expecting clean beaches.
But members of the Georgia Senate do not want the plastic bag ban to spread across the state.
So they introduced a bill to stop it, and it passed last month.
However, the Georgia House took the opposite side.
Some members backed an alliance of environmental groups supporting bag bans.
But most of the House Republicans stuck by the local government’s right to do whatever they want to improve their city.
So the ban-ban is dead for the session.
