Baylor Working Hard to Defend State Title
Baylor won the state title last year in Erik Kimrey’s first season as head coach.
It’s never easy to repeat, but it certainly helps the cause when you have two potential SEC players returning on offense.
News 12’s Brian Armstrong shines the 30-in-30 spotlight on the Baylor Red Raiders.
Second year Baylor head coach Eric Kimrey has a tough act to follow. In his first season in charge, he beat rival school McCallie and won a state title. However, Kimrey wants to make sure everyone knows that last year’s success doesn’t mean anything for this season.
Said Kimrey:”I just don’t understand how anything from last year affects this year at all. So it’s a new year, it’s a new group of guys, and we have a huge challenge in front of us. So unfortunately, they don’t give us any points for what happened last year. And we certainly have an incredibly difficult schedule. So I think if we spend any of our energy and time looking back, it’s going to cost us looking forward.
Said quarterback Whit
Muschamp:”We have a completely different team. That’s how we look at it.
Muschamp:”So we were trying to build on what we did last year, had the same morals and everything, but we’re building on what we did last year.”
Having said that, having a returning state champion at quarterback helps the offensive process.
Muschamp:”Being more familiar with the offense, me and coach came around the same page pretty much all the time, so it’s been really fun.
Kimrey:”So he’s put on 15 pounds of muscle. He understands our offense even better, and he’s a great young man and a good leader. So when you have that type of piece coming back in your offense, it’s a great place to start.”
And Musthamp will be throwing to future SEC wide receiver Amari Jefferson, who is only getting better.
Kimrey:”Last year’s full year playing receiver. So to watch him develop and develop his craft even further is going to be fun to watch this year.”
As to where the team needs to improve, Kimrey has an answer for that.
Kimrey:” Everything. Again, it’s a new group. It’s a new team. We’re still learning about ourselves and where we have strengths and where we have weaknesses, and we just need to be very diligent about improving all of it.”
And for those new players, they will have Mushamp to help acclimate them to Baylor,
welcoming them in them. I was a transfer, so I know how that is. So just welcome all those guys. So it’s been fun.
