Baylor’s Amari Jefferson just as talented in baseball as football
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Amari Jefferson helped get Baylor to the football state title game last fall as a star receiver.
Now he has the Baylor baseball team headed to spring fling as a star hitter.
News 12’s Brian Armstrong highlights Jefferson’s star power.
Baylor co-head coach Mike Kinney said, “He really played the best baseball I’ve ever seen the kid play, and it was fun to watch.”
Baylor’s Amari Jefferson has had quite a career at Baylor on the football field and on the baseball diamond.
Kinney said, “Amari’s one of the best athletes we’ve had in the city in a long time.”
Jefferson added, “It was good just to be one of those seniors, man, and just, well, to help lead this group there, man. It’s amazing.”
Jefferson’s baseball career has included a state title and breaking an aluminum bat. Yes. Broke it. And now as Baylor has made it back to Spring Fling, he’s playing his best baseball.
“And that guy played as good a baseball as he’s ever played,” Kinney said. “Probably as good a baseball as we’ve seen from a, from a center fielder, and a leader that didn’t have a ton of other people behind him that could bang it.”
“You know, we got a bigger goal than just beating McCallie,” Jefferson added.
In the quarter finals and the series win over McCallie to make it to Spring Fling. Jefferson accounted for 10 RBI’s.
“He actually came in and told me, he said, “I’m not playing baseball today. I’m playing volleyball.” I’m seeing it so well. I knew they were going to try to get me to chase stuff like that, and I trust in my guys behind me and the guys in front of me. And, you know, I’m going to take the walk if they give it to me,” Kinney said.
