Beats and Books Literacy Program continues in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) —  Beats and Books literacy program is running through the 2024-2025 school year.

The Beats and Books program features Hip-Hop and R&B artists, celebrities, and influencers reading children’s books accompanied by music.

The music used is created by students in Hamilton County enrolled with the Dynamo Studios program.

Beats and Books features a different artist as well as a different book each month.

The artist and book is selected by the City of Chattanooga’s Public Library and Early Learning Departments.

October’s Beats & Book features Rap and R&B artist Bindy, and the children’s book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr.

Beats and Books was created to promote literacy and encourage minority students to read.

This program also aims to improve educational resources by giving families free, high-quality children’s books that encourage at home literacy.

A read-aloud and musical recording of the month’s Beats and Books airs the first week of every month on Power 94 at 3:30 p.m.

After airing, students in K-3 are given a take-home library kit.

A limited number of signed copies by the month’s featured artist will be available for pickup at the following locations:

  • Downtown Public Library
  • Eastgate Public Library
  • South Chattanooga Library
  • Avondale Community Center
