Bedridden Gunshot Victim May Lose Home
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Confined to a bed for the last three years, Keoshia Ford is quite familiar with the Hello Kitty wall art and pink portraits.
However, they may have to be left behind because come November 19th, Keoshia, her mother, and four siblings may get kicked out of their home in Cromwell Hills, which owned by the Chattanooga Housing Authority.
LaKeisha Matthews, Keoshia’s mother, says, "She sent me a letter in September saying that I didn’t report Keoshia’s income and I said I did give you Keoshia’s income."
Matthews says her daughter gets a $733.00 social security check every month after being shot in the head back in 2012.
It’s a figure that Matthews says was reported to CHA from day one.
Matthews adds, "I don’t understand, I’ve been out here four years and you now trying to get me on retro rent."
According to Matthews, CHA now wants more than $6,000 or an eviction notice will come a week before Thanksgiving.
"It’s sad because me and my kids going to be homeless if this if I don’t come up with the money, says Matthews.
We went to Mike Sabin, Director of Public Housing.
He looked into the matter and issued a statement.
It reads, "The annual public housing re-certification process makes it clear that residents must report all income. In instances where income is not reported, CHA’s policy allows residents to bring themselves into compliance; however, the policy limits repayment agreements to less than $2,000 and less than 12 months.”
Matthews says, "I’m a single mom, I go through a lot with my daughter. I struggle a lot with my daughter."
Matthews tells us she saw Keoshia through countless days in the intensive care unit, complications with having a bullet still lodged behind her ear, and a slow but steady recovery.
Matthews says it’ll be hard to take on yet another challenge if she gets evicted next month.
