Behind the Curtain: Blood Donation at Blood Assurance
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Donating one pint of blood can save up to three lives, but how is that done? News 12’s Amelia Greer goes Behind the Curtain with Blood Assurance to learn how her blood donation is processed into a lifesaving medical supply.
Greer is walked through the process of donating blood which is a “mind over matter” kind of deal, as you can be in and out in less than 30 minutes!
From there, Greer follows her blood up to the lab where it is tested and divided into three components: platelets, plasma, and blood cells. Those three components are what makes the “donating blood can save up to 3 lives motto,” as each component can go to a different person.
And if anyone is curious, Blood Assurance informed News 12 that Amelia Greer’s blood was sent to Erlanger hospital where it has likely already been used just days after her donation!
