Berry College student from Alabama killed in car crash
CENTRE, Alabama (WDEF) – A two vehicle collision killed a Berry College student Friday morning in northeast Alabama.
It happened on the causeway going over Lake Weiss between Centre and Cedar Bluff.
A pickup and a car hit head-on before 9 AM, rolling the truck down an enbankment.
One person was airlifted to UAB hospital and two others driven to local hospitals.
18 year old William Theodore Howard was pronounced dead at the scene.
He is the fourth Berry College student to die this school year.
One died of natural causes in his sleep, another in a swimming accident and a third was murdered in his apartment.
Berry College issued this statement on the latest tragedy.
“It is with heavy heart and great sadness that we share that Ted Howard, a first year student from Gadsden, Ala., died this morning in a car accident. As a college community that loves deeply, our hearts are broken and we grieve deeply with his parents, Ed and Elizabeth.
“Arrangements are being handled through the Collier-Butler Funeral Home with visitation from noon – 2 and the funeral at 2 p.m. CST on Sunday. The funeral home is at 824 Rainbow Dr., Gadsden, Ala. With students returning to campus on Sunday, we are not providing transportation to the funeral but would welcome you to drive to the funeral prior to your return to campus.
“We will plan an on-campus memorial service sometime next week and will share that information when we are able to work with his parents to confirm the details. Students, please reach out to your parents and home support network if you need assistance in working through the emotional loss of a friend and classmate. Our faculty and staff are great resources for you as you return to campus with this incredibly sad start to our semester and the new year. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you hear difficult Berry news from a variety of places beyond our gates. Please take great care you as travel back to Rome for the start of the next semester.”
