Better Together is back in Hamilton County

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The initiative brings schools, families, and volunteers together to create safe and welcoming spaces just in time for the new school year.

At Calvin Donaldson Elementary, volunteers are rolling up their sleeves and transforming the back of the school into a refreshed outdoor learning space.

Cora Fisher, Principal of Calvin Donaldson Elementary School, says the project gives students a space that reflects the big dreams they hold.

“I think a project like this just means the opportunity for me. You know, students have really big dreams and really big aspirations for themselves, and it’s really important to me as a principal that we are creating a school environment where we’re hoping to meet those high expectations they set for themselves.”

“We’re so lucky. We have a creek behind our school that our students can access. I didn’t have that in my elementary school when I was growing up, so to know that students can have experiences in our E-lab and with technology, but then also be able to come outside and step away from more of a city center, they’re able to be in this tranquil outdoor space.”

From landscaping to clearing overgrown areas, volunteers are partnering with Elder’s Ace Hardware to get the job done.

Yolanda King, a parent and volunteer, says giving back is at the heart of the effort.

“It’s always good to give back to your community, and I think that’s one of the most important things that all parents try to do. I enjoy volunteering, and I’m glad I was able to do it today. It’s a great thing. I enjoy it.”

The school is also working to ensure that the space is safe for students.

Amanda Edens, Dean of Students at Calvin Donaldson Elementary School, says safety is a top priority.

“We are currently in the process of meeting with different people about all different things. We have a strong partnership with land already, and the Lookout Mountain Conservancy. So before we allow kids in to do anything, obviously all of those things will be checked.”

The principal, the administration, and community members are coming together to clear a space for children to learn, grow, and connect.
