Blood Assurance, UTC Team Up for “Bloodanooga”

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-  The scene inside the Tennessee Room at UTC’s University Center was “metal” on Wednesday morning.

Blood Assurance and the university teamed up for the semi-annual “Bloodanooga” blood drive. The theme of the blood drive was 1980’s metal rock music, inspired by Eddie Munson, a popular character from the Netflix hit show “Stranger Things”.

The event usually occurs once in the fall and and once in the spring. It is designed to target the campus community on UTC, but anyone can show up to donate.

Dr. Jamie Harvey, a faculty member of UTC’s Health and Human Performance Department is a super donor to Blood Assurance, donating over 17 gallons of blood in her life. She was on hand to emphasize the importance of donating blood when you can.

Her message to anyone who might be nervous about donating was to, “Try it! Bloodanooga, Blood Assurance, wants to assure us that they want you to return. I don’t like needles, I don’t look. They have extremely competent phlebotomists (those who draw blood) that take care of you. Eat and drink before, and eat and drink after. Give it an opportunity, because you don’t know who is going to need blood, especially your friends, family, or yourself.”

All blood types are needed and are being taken at the drive.

Dr. Elizabeth Culler, chief medical officer at Blood Assurance, said that with the impending landfall of Hurricane Ian in Florida, blood donation even here in the Tennessee Valley is heightened in importance. In the past, Blood Assurance has donated up to 100 gallons of blood to disaster areas across the country, and Dr. Culler emphasized that blood donation centers work together to get blood to areas with high demand.

The event is taking place at the University Center in the center of UTC’s campus in the Tennessee Room today and tomorrow from 10 AM-6 PM. Parking is available for the public at the visitor’s parking garage across the street from the University Center on Mocs Alumni Drive.
