Boyd Buchanan Center Maddie Wright Works Hard to Achieve Lifelong Dream

Chattanooga-(WDEF) Boyd Buchanan center Maddie Wright helped carry her team to another district tournament title over the weekend.
The Bucs imposing post player is driven by rebounds and a lifelong goal, which recently became a reality when Wright signed a college scholarship to Belmont.
Even though Maddie Wright is six-feet tall, her basketball dreams have always been bigger.
Said Wright-“I’ve pretty much wanted to play college basketball ever since I was old enough to understand it. I wanted to go Division I. I wanted to be in collge basketball. I mean, I’ve had saying and quotes, and I’ve had ‘Division I’ stamped on my mirror ever since I’ve had one.”
Added head coach Tracey Walker-“I knew the day coming in here that was one of her goals. Whatever we could do to get her there, develop whatever skills I could help her develop, then that’s what I wanted to do.”
And Wright sure had a funny way of developing her shooting skills.
Said right-“Ninth grade year when I broke my elbow, I really had to force myself to use one hand. I think that’s when it started coming along.”
Reporter-“So breaking your elbow made you a better shooter?”
Laughs Wright-“Probably. That’s when it started coming.”
Wright would gladly break her elbow if it meant getting a rebound. She has over 1,000 in her high school career.
Reporter: “Are you more proud of the 1,000 rebounds?”
Said Wright-“Yeah. It’s not something that everybody gets to say they did. It’s one thing I’ve kinda worked toward because it set me apart from everybody else, is rebounding.”
Said Walker-“It’s not just blocking out, she goes after it. She crashes the board and goes after the ball.”
Said guard Kelsey High-“You never really see her give up. She’s always going hard. She doesn’t let any thing bring her down.”
Now Wright’s D-One dreams will come true next year when she heads to Belmont.
Said Wright-“I really like the Christian aspect of the whole school. People are great, the teammates are outstanding.”
Added Walker-“She’ll be a good asset for Belmont, and I’m excited to see what she’ll do.”
