(press release)

Boyd-Buchanan School is proud to announce the hiring of Matthew Roberson as the new Head Baseball Coach and Gene Bowles as Assistant Baseball Coach for the Buccaneer baseball program. Together, Roberson and Bowles bring a strong combination of playing, coaching, and leadership experience that will help propel Boyd-Buchanan Baseball into its next chapter of success.

“I am very excited to be chosen to lead Boyd-Buchanan Baseball into their next chapter of success,” said Coach Roberson. “My family and I are thrilled to join the Boyd-Buchanan community and play a part in its future as well. The expectation of our program will be not only to be the best on the field but the best off the field as well. Our ultimate goal is to bring the first baseball state championship to Boyd-Buchanan, but also to help prepare each one of our players for college and life after. Our guys will not be outworked, and we cannot wait to see everyone in the spring. GO BUCS!”

A native of Cartersville, Georgia, Roberson graduated from Excel Christian Academy in 2007 before continuing his baseball career at Lee University and Bryan College from 2008 to 2011. Following his playing career, he gained valuable collegiate coaching experience with the softball programs at Belmont University and Tennessee Tech University.

For the past six years, Roberson has served as a private baseball instructor in the Chattanooga area, helping athletes develop their skills and prepare for the next level. Most recently, he served as the Head Baseball Coach at Red Bank High School, where he emphasized discipline, player development, and community engagement.

Roberson and his wife, Sarah, along with their son, Chance, are excited to join the Boyd-Buchanan family and community.

“Coach Roberson’s experience, energy, and vision for our baseball program will assist Boyd-Buchanan’s continued mission of excellence in athletics, academics, character and spiritual development,” said Matt Pobieglo, Director of Athletics. “We’re thrilled to welcome him and his family to the Bucs.”

Coach Gene Bowles Joins as Assistant Baseball Coach

“I’m excited and grateful to be joining the Boyd-Buchanan baseball program,” said Coach Gene Bowles. “This is a place where faith, family, and player development are foundational to everything we do. I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to work alongside one of my best friends, Coach Roberson, and to be in the same school community with my wife, Sarah, who serves as the Head Softball Coach. Having our son, Warren, start school here makes this move special for our entire family.

We are committed to helping our players grow, compete, and pursue their goals — whether that’s playing at the next level or helping this program chase its first baseball state championship. I can’t wait to get to work and represent the Buccaneer community with pride.”

Coach Bowles brings a broad and accomplished background across high school, collegiate, and elite summer baseball. He has coached in the Cape Cod Baseball League, widely recognized as the most prestigious summer collegiate league in the nation and has held coaching and athletic leadership roles at Red Bank High School, Prince George’s Community College, Dartmouth College, Cleveland Community College, and Point University.

Bowles is widely respected for his work in player development and culture building. His coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, accountability, toughness, and daily improvement, all centered around competing for championships and representing the program with class.

Gene and his wife, Sarah Bowles, Head Softball Coach at Boyd-Buchanan, are excited to become part of the Buccaneer community. Their son, Warren, will begin school at Boyd-Buchanan next year, making this a meaningful move for their entire family.
