Breakdown of I-24 construction and lane closures
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — I-24 is seeing a lot of construction work as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) attempts to make repairs and improvements to the interstate system in Hamilton County. Here is a breakdown of TDOT’s plans for construction and closures in the area.
I-75/I-24 Interchange
Phase 2 begins Friday, July 14, for the I-75 at I-24 Interchange Reconstruction. Closures and detours will last about 12 months.
Starting around 9 p.m. Friday, these two exit ramps will be closed:
- I-24 East to Moore Road.
- I-24 West to Belvoir Avenue.
Starting Wednesday, July 19 at 9 p.m., the following closures will begin:
- Moore Road Bridge.
- McBrien Road Bridge.
- Entrance ramp from South Terrace to I-24 East.
- Entrance ramp from North Terrace to I-24 West.
A detour will be set using Belvoir Avenue and Spring Creek Road.
Nightly closures will also take place on I-24. These will last from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Additionally, some other non-rush hour lane closures may happen from time to time.
I-24 eastbound and westbound will close nightly from Seminole Drive to Spring Creek Road. That is from mile marker 182 to mile marker 185.
Another closure will happen nightly on I-75 northbound and southbound from East Brainerd Road to Spring Creek Road. That is from mile marker 2 to mile marker 3.
I-24 Concrete Repair
Nightly lane closures will occur starting this Sunday, July 16, from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.
These closures will take place on I-24 and the I-24 westbound off ramp to US-27 North.
Ramps may be temporarily closed during this time.
TDOT did not state how long this construction would last.
I-24 Interchange Improvement at SR-2 and SR-58
Crews have closed off Williams Street to all traffic at the I-24 underpass. This is to support the installation of new storm drainage structures.
Drivers can still access ramps to I-24 and US-27.
However, there is no thru traffic via Williams Street, between West 21st Street and West 25th Street. Detour signs direct drivers to West 21st Street and Broad Street.
The new Broad Street I-24 exit is open, but the existing Broad Street exit is now closed. The new off-ramp from US-27 southbound is also now open.
Crews may close lanes on Market and Broad Street for milling and paving during this time.
The Market Street on-ramp to I-24 eastbound will be temporarily closed as crews pave the entrance to the ramp. This closure will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. TDOT said this closure will not last longer than three hours.
But they did not state how long this total construction would last.
“We’re asking drivers to Work with Us- pay attention, slow down, and move over for all vehicles with flashing lights,” TDOT said.
