Bryant man convicted of beating his father to death

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (AP) – An Alabama man has been convicted in the beating death of his father more than four years ago.

WHNT-TV reports that 61-year-old Byron Keith Shirey was convicted of murder Wednesday in the death of 78-year-old Charles Shirey.

Shirey called authorities in May 2017 claiming he drove to his father’s home in Jackson County out of concern and found the man dead.

But Shirey was arrested in September 2019 and accused of beating his father to death.

Investigators say Shirey was in debt and asked his father for help, but the man refused.

Records show a judge ordered Shirey to remain in custody until a sentencing hearing set for Jan. 6.
