Burn Awareness Week

Fire officials and Erlanger warn about the dangers of burns in the kitchen

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Chattanooga Fire Department and Erlanger Health System are working together to put a spotlight on National Burn Awareness Week.

The theme is “Burning Issues in the Kitchen!”.

That was selected to help prevent scald burns and distracted cooking because Nearly half of all home fires are caused by cooking.

The fire department wants people to know about the dangers and how to best care for those who are injured.

“The first thing you’ve got to do is call 911, with a major burn, get the calvary on the way, or seek attention immediately. Then, you want to remove the person from the fire or the burn, and get them away from the source of the injury.”

In 2021, the Chattanooga Fire Department worked more than 200 structure fires, including 67 cooking-related fires.
