Caitlin Milam pleads guilty to vehicular homicide of 22 year old

She tested 2 & 1/2 times over the legal limit for alcohol, plus had taken cocaine

SUMMERVILLE, Georgia (WDEF) – A northwest Georgia woman has pleaded guilty to a vehicular homicide from 2020.

Prosecutors say 22 year old Caitlin Elizabeth Milam spent the night of March 14 partying with her friends.

Witnesses say she was driving extremely fast past them at Mount Vernon Mills in Trion.

Prosecutors say that soon after that she crossed the center line and hit a vehicle driven by 22 year old Haley Smith.

Smith was heading to work.

But her vehicle flipped in the crash and crushed her.

Milam tested a blood alcohol level of .206, or about two and a half times the legal limit.

She also had cocaine and a sedation hypnotic in her system.

Evidence downloaded from her car showed she accelerated as the wheel turned five seconds before the crash.

She never hit the breaks.

Witnesses two miles away described the impact as an explosion.

Milam pleaded guilty to Homicide by Vehicle in the First Degree, Driving Under the Influence, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway, Speeding, and Reckless Driving.

The judge sentenced her to a 7 year jail term.

Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Chris Arnt stated “we are proud to finally secure justice for Haley. Due to COVID and other issues, this case took too long to secure justice for Haley and her family. But I am proud of my entire Chattooga County team for
keeping constant pressure on the system to ensure this case was resolved. Without their diligence and hard work to expedite the case, this case might still be open.”
