Calhoun Eager to Make Another State Title Run
Calhoun posted another solid 9-4 record last season, but it marked the first time in many, many years that the Yellow Jackets did not enjoy a double digit victory total.
The proud program wants opponents to feel that Yellow Jacket sting once again this fall.
Brian Armstrong has Calhoun in the 30-in-30 spotlight.
Said receiver Isaac Green:”Our goal this year is to win a state title.”
Calhoun football is known for competing for and winning state titles.
Said head coach Clay Stephenson: We’re very blessed here at Calhoun with great coaches and great players and kids that have been here running on this field since they were really little. And when they grew up, it was when we were making those runs of state championships. And so that’s all they’ve ever known, and now it’s their turn to get to do it.
Said Green; We’re working to get another banner every day. Add new years on there, working for a state championship, trying to come together as a team.
Said Stephenson: You look at each season differently in each group of seniors is completely different. Obviously, that drives you a little bit, but at the end of the day, it comes down to what you’re doing to get better.
That wasn’t the case last year as Calhoun lost
35 to nothing to Ware County in the playoffs. And that isn’t something the team is forgetting anytime soon.
Said Green; 35-0.We did not compete that game. Yes, we had injuries, but you got to have backups in there to be a team.
Green made 35 nothing. His phone screener as a way to keep him motivated, so that doesn’t happen this season.
Green; I’m going to let that be in my phone every day, because when I lift, when I work on the field, that’s never happening again.
Another player back is quarterback Trey Townsend, who last year won the starting job and has continued to advance in that QB role.
Stephenson: Trey’s done an awesome job. You can definitely tell. It’s his team now. He had an awesome spring practice and he’s had a really good summer so far. He’s stepping into we always knew he had the talent on the field, but he’s stepping into more of a leadership role and he’s worked on his athletic ability, so really looking forward to him leading the team this year.
