Campground in Cherokee National Forest closed from weather damage

TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Indian Boundary Campground in the Cherokee National Forest is now closed due to severe weather earlier this month.

The Cherokee National Forest announced the closure of the campground on Tuesday, August 22. They said the closure is effective immediately. It will remain closed until the Cherohala Skyway reopens.

Significant weather ripped through the area on August 14. It caused heavy flash flooding, which damaged roads and knocked down trees.

The Cherohala Skyway has been closed since being damaged by these storms.

“With the disruption to access to Indian Boundary, we are making the difficult decision to close the campground for health and safety reasons,” said acting District Ranger Jonathan Thomas. “The detour around the Skyway creates lengthy response times for emergency personnel and sanitation challenges that can’t be overcome until the Skyway is reopened. We know this will disrupt some plans and we hope to have it reopened when the Skyway is reopened.”
