Captured bank robbery suspect identified; told police he was “taking his lumps”

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (WDEF) — There are new details into the Tuesday afternoon bank robbery and police chase that led to one suspect captured.

According to Chattanooga Police, the suspect who was captured is Quincy Richards, 38, of Chattanooga.

Richards no stranger to law enforcement. Hamilton County Court documents show he  has a criminal rap sheet a page and half long with convictions that range from unlawful possession of a firearm and evading arrest to possession of cocaine for resale.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by News 12, Tuesday afternoon, Chattanooga Police responded to the Trust Federal Credit Union on a robbery call.

Witnesses inside the business told officers that two black males entered the building with guns. One of the suspects retrieved an employee from her office at gunpoint and made her sit on a sofa and made other employees get on the floor face down. According to police, that suspect started going through the teller drawers and took about $19,105.06.

Both suspects exited the building and fled in a silver Jeep compass before turning left on Gunbarrel Road.

An off duty CPD officer observed the SUV within minutes and attempted to to stop it.

The affidavit goes on to say that a brief chase ensued and the officer lost sight of the SUV. Moments later, the getaway vehicle was located after crashing in the 1700 block of Jarnigan.

“Both suspects then fled on foot. The first suspect was apprehended by officers and K-9. A short while later, the second suspect was able to approach a citizen who was driving a Lexus SUV. He carjacked her and fled in that vehicle,” said CPD Officer Rob Simmons.

According to the affidavit, an eyewitness saw one Richards running towards a nearby by Hampton Inn hotel.

Police followed the path in which Richards was seen running and found clothing which matched the clothing worn in the robbery.

Several calls were coming into CPD dispatch about a black male running across I-75 on foot in the vicinity where the suspect was last seen running.

Police and K-9’s located Richards after a brief foot chase and took him in custody in the 6900 block of Hickory View Lane.

According to the arresting officer, Richards had several cuts and scrapes on him from jumping fences. The officer also stated in his report that Richards said he had gotten himself into a messed up situation and was going to take his lumps.

Richards is being held at the Hamilton County jail on a $110,000 bond.

When investigators searched the Jeep that crashed, they found gun that was used in the robbery as well as money.

It’s unclear if authorities recovered all the money taken from the Credit Union.

The second suspect who has yet to be identified carjacked a woman and got away in her Lexus SUV.

The FBI has now taken over the investigation while authorities continue to search for the second suspect who is considered to be armed and dangerous.
