Carson Beck’s Patience Paying Off as Georgia’s Starting Quarterback
It’s rare to see a quarterback like Georgia’s Carson Beck, that hangs around for four years at the same school before he earns the starting job.
But Beck’s patience paid off. He’s now leading an offense averaging 40-points a game.
Carson Beck has been a pleasant surprise so far this season. He has thrown for nearly 19-hundred yards, second best right now in the SEC.
Has the success surprised Beck at all?
Said Beck:”As far as expectations go, I feel like every single game I go out I just try to be myself. I don’t expect to go throw for X amount of yards or X amount completions. It’s never about the numbers.”
Said head coach Kirby Smart:”Very rare in college football or pro football for a quarterback to be in the same system more than three years. I don’t know how many years Carson has been in the system, but I think it’s three or four. So it’s like he understands it. He knows how to use it, and he has got good weapons around him to help him with it.”
Beck is a former high school baseball pitcher, and Coach Smart believes that has helped Beck handle pressure.
Said Smart:”There’s not better pressure than you have to throw a strike. Nobody can help you throw that strike. No coach. No pitching coach. You’ve got to stand out there and throw a strike.”
Said Beck:”When you’re sitting there pitching, you’re the guy, so all the weight is kind of on you to sit there and execute whether they are throwing 80, 90, or 100 pitches a game. I’d definitely say that’s a credit to the way I handle pressure.”
And where does Beck believe he has improved the most since getting in a groove as the Dawgs starting QB?
Said Beck:”Obviously the confidence. I think that’s the biggest thing.”
Reporter:”Where do you want to see Carson Beck continue to improve at the quarterback position.”
Said Smart:”Mobility. Getting in and out of the pocket. Decision making. When to tuck it down and run versus stand in and throw.”
