CARTA Rail Study
Would you like to hop on a trolley, or a light rail system to get around Chattanooga?
CARTA wants your input to find out if that kind of public transportation can work in the city.
The city has not used rail as a form of public transportation in decades.
The tracks remain.
But there are problems with using them again, according to Peter Haliburton from Cambridge Systematics, Incorporated.
"We’ve got a lot of infrastructure in place that could potentially lend itself to rail transit service. The trouble is, it’s not publicly owned, it’s privately owned rail infrastructure and so accessing it for public use is currently a challenge."
Cambridge Systematics is helping CARTA and the City look at the possibility of bringing rail back to the Scenic City.
Right now, officials don’t know what part of town would be the best fit for this type of public transportation, according to CARTA Executive DirectorLisa Maragnano.
"There’s no definitive decisions have been made at all. That won’t be, and even at the end of this study., I think that they would see, they will give you different recommendations of what may work."
CARTA Officials hope the study will provide some of the answers.
