CCS Softball Wins District Title Two Years After Shutting Down Program
Chattanooga-(WDEF) If you look at the nice softball field at Chattanooga Christian, it’s hard to believe this was a program that shut down.
The Chargers gave up the sport for two years.
They started back up in 2016.
And then this season, they went out and won a district championship.
When Chattanooga Christian brought back their softball team after a two-year layoff was a little nerve wracking.
Said infielder Lauren Kay:”I think obviously going two years without a team maybe kind of scared us a little bit. But we knew the talent we had, and we knew we would succeed one day.”
Said head coach Lisa Gray:”When you start 8th graders and 9th graders, I think a lot of people probably did not know what to expect from us. And honestly, I don’t think we really knew what to expect, but they just come out and fight.”
The Chargers have kept fighting with no seniors on the roster, and they start two 8th graders. But they appear to have the talent where it counts in softball, and that’s in the circle.
Said Gray:”Madison Hollis and Rachel Kay. They’re both 10th graders. They’ve just been our roots on the infield. They both play first when they don’t pitch. They’re our two top hitters right now leading our team.”
Last week Gray saw her team beat Sequatchie County to claim the regular season district title.
Said Gray:”When they finally reached it, it was a very emotional time that I’ll never forget.”
Said pitcher Madison Hollis:”Coming from not having a team two years ago, it’s just huge that we accomplished this much in two years.”
With no upperclassmen on the team and a district title under their belt, don’t look for the Chargers program to go away anytime soon.
Gray:”Eventually we are going to say we’re not young anymore, but we still have that young talent that’s coming in. When they get to be juniors and seniors, we’re going to have so much game experience together that I think we’re building something pretty special here.”
