CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Central Avenue between East 11th Street and East 23rd Street will be part of a two-phase project of being re-striped and reconfigured.

That two-phase project will begin on April 15.

The reconfiguration will reduce the number of lanes from four to three, install dedicated multi-modal lanes, and create on street parking near Main Street.

The first phase begins on Central Avenue. The road will be re-striped from East 11th Street to East Main Street.

Traffic will be permitted while work is being done, but it will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The City of Chattanooga says to anticipate delays in traffic.

When phase one is completed, the second phase of reconfiguration will begin from East Main Street to East 23rd Street.

Central Avenue will be reduced from four lanes to three lanes. There will be a lane for each direction and a center turn lane. Then, dedicated multi-modal lanes will be installed.

Central Avenue from Rossville Boulevard to East 23rd Street will also be reconfigured to include a buffered multi-modal lane plus four turn lanes.

During the construction, Central Avenue will be closed to southbound traffic and detoured to Polk Street. Northbound traffic will be reduced to one line.

The project will last through the middle of May with weather permitting.
