CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA) created a scholarship for students attending the Construction Career Center. They say this scholarship will honor the late Commissioner Jim Sattler.

The scholarship is for students living in the Westside and attending the Construction Career Center. The Chattanooga Housing Authority said the scholarship will also give students new gear, such as work boots, gloves, knee pads and construction hats.

Additionally, Leslie Gower, president of AGC of East Tennessee, said the AGC will match the funding from the CHA.

Gower continued, “We know the importance of having the right tools to do the job, and having proper equipment for our students is equally important. We’re grateful for this ongoing commitment and the relationship with the Chattanooga Housing Authority. Together, we’re building a foundation for the future of our industry.”

Jim Sattler died in January. Prior to his death, he served on the board of commissioners for several years. Sattler was involved in the construction and development industry throughout his career, CHA said.

Sattler was involved in civic- and faith-based efforts throughout his life, the housing authority said.

Students who graduate from the Construction Career Center will earn a general contractor’s license.

CHA Executive Director Betsy McCright said, “once employed, the students will be able to move out of public housing and will be on their way toward self-sufficiency. Ending generational poverty and building wealth will finally be attainable for these students. Nothing would please Jim more.”
