Chandler Tygard Bringing Wild, Up-Tempo Offfense to Cleveland Blue Raiders
Cleveland, TN-(WDEF-TV) Josh Heupel won’t be the only one running that crazy, up-tempo offense this fall.
New Cleveland coach Chandler Tygard is bringing the fast-pace attack to the Blue Riaders. And as Brian Armstrong reports, Tygard will do things that might even make Heupel’s head spin.
New Cleveland head football coach Chandler Tygard brings with him an offense that Tennessee Vols fans are familiar with.
Said Tygard:”There’s a lot of Tennessee fans in East Tennessee, so we’re very similar to them.So we run plays every about 10 seconds. We average about 84 plays a game. And we we like to go as fast as we can go.And we’re kind of like a shark. We’re always, we’re never full, always hungry, trying to score as many points as we can.”
During his time at Blackman, he had one quarterback throw for over 2000 yards passing, another quarterback throw for over 1000 yards, and they had over 6000 yards of total offense. All of that in just one season,
Said Tygard:”Everything we run.So it’s unbalanced formations, trick plays, double passes onsite kicks. You only get to prepare for that stuff for three or four days in a high school game week. And so we’re just very difficult to prepare for because not only do you have to worry about the tempo, you got to worry about the formations and all the different plays and all the different looks we give you.”
He used his 14 years of being a defensive coach as a method to his offensive strategy.
Said Tygard:”We put in everything I hated as a defensive coach. And so we do not only do we go fast, we use multiple quarterbacks. We’ll play two at the same time.We run a bunch of trick plays, double passes, different things like that.We use analytics, so we go for it a lot on fourth down.”
Tygard says you don’t need to be in an extreme rush to run a play every 10 seconds. You just need to be efficient and well prepared, which is done through always practicing at that pace.
Said Tygard:”We did the GPS last year at Blackman, so I can tell exactly how fast our kids run, how long they’re running, what their load is, so we can kind of tailor them in practice if they’re doing too much because we are going so fast and they play both ways.So then, hey, maybe this kid needs to do a little less on Monday and Tuesday this week.”
