Tuesday afternoon Chatt State offered a celebration of their First Gen students.

Amanda Jordan with Chatt State organized the events. She said she wants to make sure first gen college students know their resources and support system.

“So, one in four of Chattanooga students are first generation college students,” said Jordan. “This is something that we try to do every year, have some type of event to commemorate this day is just to show students the support that they have on campus and in the community.”

Joshua Clay is the first in his family to attend college. He said staff at Chatt State helped calm his nerves as he navigated his freshman year.

“Well, being a first gen college student, I did feel a lot of stress of wanting to be successful in my academic pursuits. But, at Chatt State is more so about who you know, and not what you know. So through a great support system, the stress didn’t last very long,” said Clay.
