Chattanooga Area Food Bank Help In Meigs County
There are more than half a dozen centers in Meigs County where more than 150 children will get fed this week.
Laura Kilpatrick, Chattanooga Area Food Bank,"There’s about 700 kids that are food insecure in Meigs County. We are giving 120-150 a day and we know that there’s a lot of potential out there"
Laura Kilpatrick with the Chattanooga Area Food Bank says she along with other volunteers have to go out into the county to find the starving children as some have no way of making it to the church.
"A lot of kids are living with their grandparents moving around throughout the summer and its hard to capture them"
Meigs County Church goers say they are glad to partner with the Food Bank as they’re struggling to cope with demands.
Richard Boggess, Lakeside Baptist Church,"The church tries to have a youth program, we run two vans and sometimes a school bus just to get kids to come in here, we feed on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings".
Church director Richard Boggess says if they don’t feed these children no one else will.
Richard Boggess , Lakeside Baptist Church,"In my bible Jesus tells us to go out and food the hungry and I am retired and I have the opportunity to come help these people"
All meals are free of charge for those under 18 and some children in the county were taken from nearby trailer parks and barns to get fed this week.
