Chattanooga and ETSU Prepare to Renew Old Rivalry
Chattanooga and ETSU used to be annual opponents in the Southern Conference, until the Bucs dropped their football program after the 2003 season.
Now ETSU has resurrected their football program, and both the Bucs and Mocs seem excited to resurrect their series as well this weekend.
Chattanooga returns to ETSU on Saturday for the first time in 13-years.
And as the Bucs and Mocs renew their series, expect the old rivalry to be renewed as well.
Said UTC head coach Russ Huesman-“I think they kind of get a feel that this could be a rivalry. Eventually.”
Said ETSU head coach Carl Torbush-“This in my opinion is our cross-town rival. We hope they fell the same way or at least at some point we make them feel the same way.”
Said UTC offensive lineman Corey Levin-“They are going to be well-coached. They are going to be fired up because a lot of the guys on their team played high school ball with some guys on our team.”
Said ETSU linebacker and former South Pittsburg star Kahlil Mitchell-“Well I know from me being down there. I kind of have a natural hate for Chattanooga. Coming up here and adopting that rivalry wasn’t hard. I’m pretty sure all the players they get know that we don’t like Chattanooga.”
Said Mocs defensive back Lucas Webb-“We can tell just by some of the other sports like the basketball team. They had a really big game. It was a close game last year. Just from some of the other sports teams. This is definitely something they are used to competing with.”
While this is just ETSU’s second season back playing football, the third ranked Mocs are not taking them lightly.
Said Webb-“Think coach said it best. He said they are deceptively good.”
Said Huesman-“For them to come up with an offensive line that are young in a two year span of time. It’s a credit to what they are doing there. Their offensive line is better than Samford’s.”
ETSU also features former Cleveland Blue Raider quarterback Austin Herink.
Said Huesman-“High completion percentage. He hasn’t thrown an interception. He leads the team. You can see his a leader out there.”
