Chattanooga gas prices rise 23 cents ahead of July 4th
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Gas prices in Chattanooga rose 23 cents per gallon over the last week, according to a GasBuddy survey.
On Monday, July 1, Chattanooga gas prices averaged $3.06 per gallon.
The survey said prices are 21 cents higher than this time last month, and they are 6 cents higher than a year ago.
Nationally, gas prices rose 5 cents over the past week, averaging $3.46 per gallon.
Additionally, diesel prices have risen 1.4 cents per gallon in the last week across the U.S. The average diesel price is $3.77 per gallon.
GasBuddy surveys 170 stations in Chattanooga to find the average gas prices. They also look at gas prices from over 150,000 stations across the country.
This time last year, gas prices averaged $3.00 per gallon in Chattanooga, according to GasBuddy. In 2022, prices averaged $4.29 per gallon, and in 2021, prices averaged $2.85 per gallon in July.
“As we approach July 4 later this week, motorists have seen the national average price of gasoline inch up ever so slightly for the third straight week,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “While the increases have been fairly tame, with oil continuing to hold above $80 per barrel, we could continue to see the national average climb slightly. Other areas that see price cycling saw prices shoot up early in the week, but those areas are now starting to see prices fall back down. For many Americans hitting the road for the July 4 holiday, prices in most areas are very comparable to what we saw last July 4. However, with Hurricane Beryl now formed in the Caribbean, we’re reminded that gas prices could experience some jolts in the second half of the summer should a storm threaten refining capacity in Texas or Louisiana.”
