Chattanooga Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on 300th home
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Habitat for Humanity of Chattanooga recently broke ground on their 300th home.
Leaders held this groundbreaking on October 5, 2023.
The Habitat is helping to build this home for Tangela Walker and her family. She applied for Habitat’s housing program after having a year full of hardships. In only a few months, Walker said her sister passed away, her brother had a stroke and her marriage ended.
She applied for this program in 2022, and Habitat for Humanity then accepted her application in January of 2023. Walker met the criteria needed to qualify for this program. According to the Habitat, she even finished her volunteer hours in record time.
“Today is an amazing day. Not only are we celebrating breaking ground on a 300th habitat home here in the Greater Chattanooga area, but we’re celebrating it with Tangela, who is just an amazing homeowner,” said Jens Christensen, CEO of Habitat for Humanity. “She is one of those folks who really lights up a room. She brings her spirit to everything that she does.”
Walker said it took some volunteers up to two years to complete the program, but she worked third shift to quickly complete her hours.
Habitat for Humanity adds that this home will be in honor of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn for supporting the organization for four decades.
Leaders say they are also always looking for new volunteers and supporters.
