Chattanooga man arrested after shooting neighbor and dog on Sylvan Drive

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A 41-year-old Chattanooga man has been arrested after a shooting that left a neighbor and the neighbor’s dog injured.

On April 21, 2025, at 4:24 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to a person shot call in the 800 block of Sylvan Drive.

Upon arrival, officers found a 64-year-old man with non-life-threatening injuries and learned that the victim’s dog had also been shot.

Chattanooga Fire and Hamilton County EMS treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital.

McKamey Animal Protection Services responded to care for the injured dog.

According to the Chattanooga Police Department (CPD), the victim was in his front yard when his neighbor, identified as Anthony Newsom, allegedly approached and opened fire.

Police say Newsom had threatened the victim earlier in the day.

Following the shooting, Newsom returned to his home, where he was located and arrested.

Newsom is charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, and Tampering with Evidence.

He was taken to the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center.
