Chattanooga mayor comments on Chief Murphy investigation
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly briefly spoke about an ongoing TBI investigation against Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy.
Earlier this month, both Chattanooga Police and the TBI confirmed the investigation, although they have not gone into specifics.
Mayor Kelly said while his office is not directly involved in the investigation, he does not plan to suspend her during the investigation despite being asked to do so by the Fraternal Order of Police.
“Our treatment of Chief Murphy is consistent with our employee information guide and the guidelines of the department,” said Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly. “So, we’re comfortable with where things stand today. She’s not involved in any disciplinary proceedings during this interim so again if I’m paying somebody for a job I want them on the job.”
CPD said an internal affairs investigation unrelated to the TBI investigation was put on hold while the state continues their inquiry.
