Chattanooga Mocs Diving Right Into New Season With SoCon Opponent

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Chattanooga Mocs are diving right into the 2022 season this weekend.
They’re opening with a conference opponent in Wofford.
Luckily UTC will bring plenty of talent and experience into the match-up.

Mocs are favored to win the SoCon this year.
Head coach Rusty Wright says his team has looked like champs in camp.
Said Wright: “I’m more excited to watch this group play than anytime I’ve been here because the things they have done since January. And the way they have tried to go through and do things right.”
Coach Wright is also excited by the depth on the defensive line.
Reporter: “How many guys do you have that you are comfortable with rotating in and out?”
Said Wright: “Right now. Eight. Maybe nine.”
Reporter: “That’s a lot.”
Said Wright: “I’m not complaining. I promise you. It’s hard going against our defensive line every day. It’s miserable.”
Said offensive lineman McClendon Curtis: “I mean. I ain’t going to say miserable. I’m fine. I’m fine. I love going against those guys because they only make us better.”
Defensive lineman Devonnsha Maxwell can make things miserable.
He’s 7 and-a-half sacks away from setting both the UTC and SoCon career sacks record.
Said Maxwell: “It plays a lot on my mind. It’s something that to put myself in the record books at Chattanooga for the rest of my life. Something I strive to always be better.”
Reporter: “How were you lucky enough to get a SoCon game to open the season?”
Said Wright: (laughs) “Welcome to the Southern Conference right?”
Said Curtis: “No it doesn’t matter. Football is football. I mean it’s important because you know in our conference you can’t really lose any or too many. So you just have to go out there and play ball.”
Play ball.
Coach Wright doesn’t mind playing a little hard ball when asked who will start at quarterback.
Said Wright: “I’m not telling you. It’s the only thing I’ve got in my pocket okay. I’m not doing that. We’ll get it figured out, and you’ll see when he trots out there.”
