Chattanooga Police Investigate Arson at Jewish Cultural Center
The Chattanooga Police and Fire Department are investigating an arson at the Jewish Cultural Center that happened early Sunday morning.
No one was hurt, but the investigation has authorities looking for answers as to who may have intentionally set the fire.
CPD is searching for clues after responding to the Jewish Cultural Center for a report of damage to two vehicles.
Both cars belonged to the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga.
The organization used them as a way of transportation and delivering meals for more than 100 people, mainly the elderly.
Michael Dzik, executive Director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga, said they relied on the cars to help others in need.
“4 days a week we use them to transport members of the Jewish community and non-Jewish community to various appointments. We’re able to take them to the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment. People that are home bound or need food, we’re able to deliver once a week. It’s just a few meals, you know, for the week, but it allows us to do that as well.”
Police say they notified arson investigators with the Chattanooga Fire Department.
CPD is acting as the lead investigating agency to determine if this incident was motivated by prejudice.
However, Dzik said they don’t suspect it to be a hate crime.
“All indications right now point that it is not a hate crime. Police believe that this was just a random act…whether it be some kids or teens or who knows why.”
However, Chattanooga Police have notified patrol units across the county and are increasing their patrols near and at Jewish centers and houses of worship.
Despite the loss of the two vehicles, the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga is going to continue to provide their services.
“There’s a lot of people that rely on us and we’re going to be there to serve them. Right now we’re reassessing and getting our rental cars in order so we can be ready for Monday morning. We’re not going to let it stop us or push us down. we’re obviously disheartened a little bit, but we’re going to go out and make tomorrow a brighter day.”
Chattanooga Police are asking anyone with any information to contact them at423-698-2525.
