Chattanooga Police are recruiting

Chattanooga police are looking a few good men…and good women.
With new police academies planned for this year, the recruiting is in progress.

Chattanooga Police are currently running an on-going recruitment for more officers.

A career fair was held at Hamilton Place earlier today and were conducting interviews onsite.

Chattanooga spokesperson Rob Simmons says, ‘there can be turnover at times especially when you have officers retiring or pursuing other careers, so there’s always a continual need to have officers come in the bottom ends as they leave at the top end.’

Recruiting officers spend much of their time at community events and career fairs.

The department has made changes in its recruiting requirements over the years.
That is, physical fitness, with respect to race, gender and age.

Simmons says the job, if you are selected, is very rewarding.

Simmons points out that, ‘this job has a lot of small accomplishments. A lot of people think they’re going to take this job and they’ll go out there and stop a bullet for someone which could very well happen, however you’ve got to see the bigger picture and realize there’s a lot of small goals; small joys you bring in this life with each call you go to.’

Currently there are about 480 officers at the police department.

Officer Simmons says the goal is to get to 500.
